# Visual Life Map: Charting a Turning Point

A visual life map means plotting the key moments of your life — jobs, travels, relationships, lessons learned — onto a single visual representation, to understand the overall arc before deciding what comes next. VitaeMap is a tool built for exactly this: it visualizes an entire life through multiple representations (geographic map, timeline, emotional trek) rather than as a resume or a professional feed.

## Why a Resume or LinkedIn Falls Short

A resume lists job titles. LinkedIn optimizes for visibility within a professional network. Neither answers the question that actually matters at a turning point: what, in my path, genuinely counts — and what does that say about where to go next?

That question shows up in very different situations: a career change, a breakup, a new child, a move, the end of a contract. What they share is the need to step back and look at a whole set of experiences, rather than listing them in order.

It's a question I've asked myself more than once: developer, then innovation consultant, then leader of a startup, then head of innovation at a large company — and now founder of VitaeMap. On a resume, that's four lines that don't obviously connect. Mapped visually, with what each step actually contributed rather than just the job title, a direction emerges — the one that eventually led to building a tool so others could do the same exercise on their own path.

## What a Visual Map Changes

Three differences from a list or a resume:

- Experiences are connected to each other in space, in time, or by emotion — not just stacked by date.
- Each event can carry personal indicators (satisfaction, impact, emotional intensity) — the trajectory can be read through how it felt, not only through the facts.
- The same set of experiences can be viewed from several angles: a map of places visited, a timeline, an emotional journey — depending on the question being asked at a given moment.

## How to Build Your Own Visual Life Map with VitaeMap

1. List the key events — no need for completeness at first, a handful of key experiences is enough to start seeing a shape.
2. Rate each event by what it meant to you (satisfaction, impact) rather than by its "objective" importance — a quiet moment can matter more than an impressive line on a resume.
3. Look at the whole under a first representation (map or timeline), to spot clusters, gaps, and breaks.
4. Switch representations to test other readings of the same trajectory.

## Who This Is For

This kind of exercise is especially useful for people navigating a career change, reflecting after a breakup or a major personal shift, or simply at a point where stepping back to look at a whole path becomes necessary before deciding what's next.
