# Career Change: Visualize Your Path Before You Switch Jobs

Before a career change, the most useful exercise isn't listing transferable skills on a resume — it's visualizing your whole path to see what actually drove it: the moments of real satisfaction, the choices that mattered, the patterns that repeat from one job to the next despite very different titles.

## Why a Resume Doesn't Prepare You for a Career Change

A resume lists jobs and skills in chronological order. It's a format built to convince a recruiter, not to help you understand your own trajectory. A career change rarely starts from a skills list — it starts from a vague feeling, "this isn't right anymore," that needs to be clarified before you know what to move toward.

That clarification requires looking at the whole path, not just the last line of the resume: early career choices, the moments work felt meaningful, the ones it didn't, and the experiences outside work that sometimes mattered more than the professional ones themselves.

## What a Visual Map Reveals

Placing the key events of a path on a visual representation instead of a list surfaces patterns a resume never shows:

- Jobs that looked similar on paper but felt very different to live through (satisfaction, impact).
- Patterns that repeat regardless of industry or title — a type of work, a way of operating, a kind of recognition you kept seeking.
- Sharp breaks, which often mark a more revealing turning point than continuity does.

This is exactly what a visual life map makes visible: the overall shape of a path before deciding where to go next — see Visual Life Map: Charting a Turning Point Before Choosing What's Next.

## How to Do This Exercise Before a Career Change

1. List both the professional experiences and the experiences outside work that mattered — a career change is often fed by volunteer work, a hobby taken seriously, or a meaningful trip, not just the career itself.
2. Rate each experience by what it gave you personally (satisfaction, impact), not by how impressive it looks.
3. Look at the whole under a timeline to spot cycles and breaks.
4. Identify what keeps coming back from one experience to the next — it's often a more reliable compass than a list of jobs that look like a fit on paper.

## Who This Is For

This exercise is for people considering a career change who don't yet have a clear direction — before choosing a training program or a new field, understanding what actually mattered in the past path avoids reproducing the same dissatisfactions under a different job title.
